Afternoon Tea Tips with Silk Road

Posted By: Maxwell & Williams

In celebration of our extensive Teas & C’s collection, we talked tea, cake and motherhood with stylist Vicki Valsamis, learning all about her approach to laying out a special sweet and savoury spread to enjoy with loved ones.

“I have a beautiful relationship with my Mum, Margaret, and I enjoy taking the time to bake her something special from my kitchen. I involve my two gorgeous stepchildren, Penny and Will, in the process which is always a lot of fun. They love her dearly and really get into the spirit of Mother’s Day not only for her but also for me which is incredibly precious. It’s creating these traditions and memories for everyone in our modern family which mean the most...”, - Vicki Valsamis.

Read her top tips below.

Tip 1: Odd numbers

Aim to plate up both tiers with odd numbers, it may sound strange to say but from a presentation point of view it helps keep things looking balanced.

Tip 2: Alternating sizes

A selection of larger items, in varying heights and widths on the bottom tier make for a solid base. Use the same principle with smaller items on the top tier to lighten the cake stand.

Tip 3: Mix it up

No need to just use cakes per se. Look at including biscuits, tartlets, cupcakes and brownies for variety and interest in both shape and colour.

Tip 4: Savoury and sweet

Keep the plating of your savoury and sweet items separate. I opted to use the Teas and C’s rectangular platter for finger sandwiches as the shape of the dish pairs perfectly with the platter. Presenting in this manner also complements serving savoury and sweet at different times.
