Ways to celebrate Women’s Month

Posted By: Maxwell & Williams (SA)

Don’t let another Women’s Month pass you by without taking some action. How do you ask?

Here are some ways to celebrate Women’s Day (9 August) and Women’s Month:

Understand and explore the history of Women’s Day in South Africa and commemorate the 20 000 women of all races that marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956 to protest the pass laws of the time.

Celebrate the strength and resilience of women in South Africa and around the world. Not only those who played a key role through history but also those in your own town or community. Talk amongst your friends and family about the accomplishments of women and the issues that women still face today.

Host an event to celebrate women. Organise an uplifting and inspiring tea or lunch for the women in your world – at your company, in your community or amongst your friends. Play music by female artists, read poems by female poets and celebrate all things female.

Build your own community of women. Reaching out to your neighbours and other women in your community is good for the wellbeing of all. Intentionally create a group of women around you that you can support, laugh with, grow with and cry with.

Pledge to donate to a charity regularly. Your local children’s home, church or shelter for vulnerable women are good places to start.

Teach the children in your life about the importance of education and equal opportunities for women.

Gift the women in your life or ones that simply inspire you with a thoughtful gift and a handwritten note of admiration and appreciation.

Support female artists and makers – follow their social pages, support their projects and buy their art. Local female artists like Pathu Designs, Amy Ayanda, Andel Olivier, Wanderland Collective, Luvuthando Dolls, Mira Jaan and Amy Lee Originals are only a handful of the wonderful female artists in South Africa.
